So, this is fun. And by fun I mean pretty shitty.
“This” is, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic, sometimes known as coronavirus. Which is admittedly a much catchier name, if less accurate. And, what luck, I get to live in one of the major infection zones!
Things aren’t so bad for now, though there are definitely negatives. I have to work from home, which I dislike with a fiery passion. But I wasn’t wild about a lot of aspects of this job anyway, so that’s probably no surprise. I think I mostly an irritated that I have to make literal space for my dayjob in my home, and that I lose the light-duty social contact I got with my coworkers sometimes. By the time they kicked us out of the building, only three or four other people were still coming in on my team, out of about ten people still coming in on our floor of the office. So we were probably pretty safe anyway, but I understand wanting to practice an abundance of caution.
Also I miss people. Both my writing groups are currently cancelled, though one just started trying out meeting digitally today. Both my RPG groups are attempting to move online, which worked out well for one (the other one test runs tonight). There’s also a nice gentleman I’ve been seeing who I’d like to continue to see in person. We saw each other a couple weeks ago at a bar that had two other people, including the bartender, in it besides us. We’d planned to meet at one or the other’s homes next week, but I’m not sure how well that’ll play with the current best practices for social distancing. So :(.
Other stuff has been nice. I get to harass (by which I mean pay attention to, her least favorite thing) my iguana more often. I did a pile of houseplant gardening yesterday and have propagated my pothos, repotted some succulents, done some overdue maintenance on the monstera (including giving it a ~*~ MOSS TOTEM ~*~, and given everyone some fertilizer spikes. I also took a somewhat-broken enormous plastic pot I didn’t have a water-plate to put under and turned it into an outdoor compost bin on the balcony. Oh, and I made my balcony not covered in leaves, which was nice. I could probably actually sit out there again now! Which I will want to do, because sweet, sweet outside time.
I’m also considering building a bench or putting chairs out front of my apartment, because the walkway is a nice place to catch some sun during the day. I will probably also obtain some lavender cuttings from down the street and try starting those out to get some plants out in front of my place. I’d like to rig up some collard greens growing inside, too, probably hanging from a wall, because I want to have a steady supply of fresh food for Jabbers if things go real sideways and because it sounds fun. I’ll see if they have seeds for it at the drugstore next time I do a pharmacy run for my meds.
I haven’t been doing enough work on my portfolio for school, even with all the inside time, but what else is new. Hoping to get some good momentum going this week and have most or all of it done or at least first-drafted by the 31st. I’ve found all the documents I can use as evidence finally, so that should hopefully help speed things up.
The only current major question marks are getting enough exercise and making sure my community’s okay. I want to set up a neighborhood mutual aid group because while everyone seems fine, sickness is invisible and there also might be some disabled or immunocompromised people who can’t go out right now even if they’re not sick. But I’m not sure the best way to host it. Besides not using fucking Nextdoor. For exercise, I have my weight set but I never get enough cardio and being at home all day is making it worse. Going to order a new chain for my bike and use that, I think. Or go running at off-hours. The bike would be better though, because then I also won’t need to use my car during all this unless I’m transporting something big for someone.
Hope everyone is healthy, or if not is on the mend. Stay safe out there and don’t be afraid to reach out. Hopefully we’ll all be able to hang out in person again soon! <3
