Ed Note: I was getting all ready to write this post, and then my laptop battery died. But I had my alphasmart in my bag! Yay! And, uh, fell asleep at home before I could post it, so just pretend this went up on the 23rd instead.
Of course, now I need to actually figure out what to write about…
I picked up playing Pokemon Go again. I wanted an extra reason to go outside on my breaks at work, and it’s been working really well at encouraging to get out and go take a walk around the block instead of just sitting at my depressing-ass desk and flopping around the ‘net on my laptop for fifteen minutes.
I was also encouraged by the fact that Simone de Rochefort on the Polygon Show podcast has started playing it again recently and mentioned it had gotten a lot better. And it has! I haven’t explored it super in-depth yet, but they’ve added some fun mechanics like quests and medals (achievements but with XP bonuses) that encourage you to try new things and give you more sources of XP. Combined with the fact that there’s now a ton more Pokemon in the game than the last time I played it in 2017 and a lot of the repetitiveness is gone. Hell, even when I’m catching yet another Rattata sometimes it’s the Alolan version. (Also Rattata’s great, I’ll fight you.)
Getting out in the sun and fresh air’s been pretty good for my energy levels, too. Not enough to stop me from needing coffee, but the getting up and moving makes me feel better than just sitting at my desk 99% of the day.
It’s early days yet but I hope to keep it up as a way to just have fun and get some more movement in my life. I’ve been weightlifting pretty regularly, but that alone wasn’t feeling like enough exercise/movement and this helps fill in some of that need.
So, anyone want to play with me? I have a quest that needs me to add some new people… :3
